The Alternative Housing conference was held this year at CLAYS LANE HOUSING CO-OP in Stratford, East London. Clays Lane also had their Summer Fayre, so there was entertainment beyond the cerebral. It all happened on Saturday 11th September 2004 from 11am till 6pm.. A big THANK YOU to the members of Clays Lane who provided us all with an amazing lunch and enough tea, coffee and biscuits to last the day and to the Speakers, for coming to educate us for free.

The Conference once more explored the possibilities of Alternative housing sector (ie those involved in the provision of self-help, sustainable and progressive housing solutions). The event was opened by Storm Poorun, who exposed some of the weaknesses of Alternative Housing and where he believed it should focus its efforts. The initial speakers (ie Paul Beard (EHA) and Toby Lloyd) provided the facts, figures and falacies of the Housing market. John Lynn then updated us on the Clays Lane Housing Co-op's conflict with the Housing Corporation. Tea and biscuits were followed by Chris Cook, who introduced the rather mind-boggling but potentially influential financial tool, the Limited Liability Partnership. Sadly Emmanuel was unable to make it to the conference. James Noble presented the Carbon 60 project at Sanford Housing Co-op and took questions on it. Mark from the Wombles then gave a slideshow on squatted social centres and especially the recently evicted Grand Banks. Simon Fairlie went on to address the issue of countryside planning laws, low-impact developments and "Buildings of Outstanding Architectural Design" in the countryside. Al Jack and John Hall finished the conference off with a history and update of Radical Roots and the Cowley Club respectively.
